Default Temp guage behaving strange, thermostat probs?

Well, ever since the big freeze a while back my temp gauge hasnt been working as it was. Before then, it took a few miles , but it got to about 90, and stayed thereabouts, now it hardly moves, in traffic, it does creep up slowly, but not as much as before, and once I get going it drops right back to zero? that cant be right can it?
So if this is the stat, how much to replace, or is it an easy job?

1.8 16v according to your profile? Dead easy and pretty cheap too.

You'll need some instant gasket seal too. If your Antifreeze hasnt been changed just as well doing that too, 5lt of Red Antifreeze from your local VX dealer for £15(which is as cheap, if not cheaper than motor factors.

Now not wanting to hand out bad advice the only other things it can be is the Temp Sender unit in the Thermostat Housing unit, you'll more than likely have to go to a VX dealer for this, of course you could spent £50+ on a thermostat from a VX Dealer as they only sell the whole unit including the temp sender unit, mind you for that you do get a new gasket too.

So worth changing the whole unit then? probably easier that way?

Its up to yourself tbh. The £7 Thermostat unit takes about 10 seconds to swap over, but the benefits of the complete unit are that you get a new gasket(which is not available separately at the dealers) and, hopefully, a new temp sender unit too.

The Autovaux one does include the temp sender unit.
    The stealers quoted me
"The cost for replacing the thermostat would roughly be £235.44 inclusive of parts, labour and VAT. "
If its as simple as taking off two hoses, unscrewing two bolts, disconnecting a wire, then I am probably going to do it myself.

How come so many people are reporting faulty thermostats?
Or is it just that people are paying attention to them, having not noticed how poorly they perform!
