    Default Thermostat housing bolts problem

Sorry for so many posts/Queerys its just im having so much trouble at the moment.
Local mechanic did a regular service for me today he was also to put in a new thermostat BUT he cant do the job.
Reason he gave me was that there is 2 bolts holding it on and the bottom bolt head has sheered of and he cant get it off.
He said he needs some tool to do the job (cant remember what it was)
Does this sound like a thermostat issue?
    Car slow to heat up.
When it heats up in traffic( need sits about half way on temp guage) i get some heat from heater but its not great.
When i go onto the motorway the needle on the temperature guage drops right down to its lowest ?

Sounds like the thermostat to me.

I'd wager that he needs to drill out the sheered-off bolt and then use an Easy Out on it. It's a reverse-threaded tool that you wind into the drilled out bolt and, as it tightens, the remains of the bolt are unscrewed. I saw this actually work last weekend! First time for everything!

Anyway, the problem will be access to the errant sheered bolt to get the drill into it. Do-able, I'd think but lots will need to be removed to make space.

I notice you have the 1.8 non vvt. The housing is not threaded so the bolt should move freely through it, maybe it was just the gasket holding it in place. If it's just the head that has snapped off then it should be easy to remove the rest of the bolt with mole grips or a wrench once the housing is off as there should be a cm or so sticking out of the block.

^^ This is true. I should have said, "The problem might be..."

If the above it true, then the difficult bit may be prying the cover off. Shouldn't be too hard, though, if you can get the other bolt out.
