Nikon d3100 is a fantastic digital slr mate that gives out stunning results 14mp full hd video and even has a beginner feature on it for your wife to learn think they go for about the £449 mark at the moment with the 18-55vr lens!! She will not be disapointed in it

Most modern compact point and shoot digital cameras are idiot proof nowadays but if anyone can do it canon can.

Can't go wrong with a Canon (or Nikon) compact or DSLR.

I've used a Canon compact for years and the quality is superb. Half the time I don't even bother taking my DSLR.

Don't be conned by mega-pixels though. Bigger is not always better.
My 5MP Canon takes better pics than most 8/10/12 MP compacts I've seen.

Get a quality body/lens/sensor/firmware camera and you won't be disappointed.

Yay, that's what I've got too.

However, I have replaced the lens to a Sigma version with 15-200, as you dont get much zoom on the standard lenses.

If you can afford a little more, it might be worth going up the range for the tiltable screen and video capture.

    I am totally CANON ...

    Got a nice 7D, 24-70 2.8 L, 70-200 2.8 IS L, 100-400 IS L

Had a look at the 550 recently and its very good ...

The important bit is the good lens. Even if you have a 1Ds III, but with a cheap lens .... they wont be as good as they could be

I love my Finepix DSLR - can't remember the model number. It has 10 mp of resolution and a 12X optical zoom (I think it's that way around ) and I can fit it in my coat pocket. It has much more versatility than most "compact" cameras, IMHO and was only something like £120 brand new (Amazon).

I'd love a really decent 'proper' SLR, though, so I could fit different lenses. My compact SLR doesn't allow for that.

Enjoy your camera... and your baby daughter!
