Unhappy Difficulty selecting gears 2.2 direct!!

    Hi,
I am new to this forum, I have searched and searched for answers to my problem and i have ended up here, ok so here goes.

About a week ago i started my car up too go to work and noticed some resistance when selecting all gears, more noticeable in 3rd and 4th but every now and again in 2nd and 5th. Some times the gears wont go in for about 5 seconds then finally go in, they occasionally crunch into gear. it is although as if i'm not using my clutch and just easing the gearstick into gear. once in gear the care runs perfect. some times i can shift and everything be fine and then all of a sudden i will have difficulty selecting gear any help would be GRATELY appreciated. Thanks Dan

You tried draining the gearbox fluid and refilling with fresh stuff, 2.4 ltrs i think is the correct fill amount, might be wrong but seems to make a difference

I havent tried nothing as of yet, I have read a lot on air being in the pipes of the clutch system. Is this a complex task to drain the fluid and replace? I suppose this is worth a try before i take it into a garage. If i was too drain and replace the fluid is there any help here on how to do this? Thanks Dan

PM me your registration number and I'll look on the parts system to see if it states what gearbox you have; it usually states it, a few times it doesn't.

I have pm my reg to you, Is it a difficult job replacing the gear box oil and whats the likelyhood that it will rectify the problem. Its become sort of a mission to fix this my self now rather than get raped by a garage ha ha!

PM/Reg number received - you have the F23 gearbox, so not the F40 mentioned above. Changing the gearbox oil is beneficial to any manual transmission, especially if you also add in gearbox grease such as this:

However, it may be the case that your problem is more to do with the selector mechanism needing aligning - which, I believe, usually involves jiggling around the rods that go from the gearlever into the gearbox.
