Default Corsa Advice - Burning oil (Yes i know its a vectra forum!)

    Hi guys,

I've asked on the Corsa forum but its completely useless so hoping some of the tech heads on here can offer their thoughts.

My girlfriend's corsa is buning oil at a rate of about 1 litre to 500 miles if not worse. I hear that they usually burn oil at worse 1 litre to 800 miles.

Her chain and tensioners are noisy as hell so they are getting renewed tomorrow, but im worried about the oil (could it be that the engine noise is something worse...) - definitely isnt leaking and there isnt any blue smoke, although giving it some beef parked up earlier it did appear after a while to puff out some fairly dark smoke.

Its a 1.2 sxi 2003 and currently has 5-30 oil in it i think.

Any suggestions on what tests to do and what to look out for?

Mileage? Possibly hardened Oil stem seals? If it was these you'd normally notice it at start up as a puff of blue smoke.

Our 1.2 SXI done the same and the 1.6 Sport too. Never did find the cause of the fault before we got rid.

The vast majority of Corsas drink oil but not normally like that. Mine used to go through a litre every 800-1000 miles. Who owned it before you? Any chances it has been ragged to death by a previous owner? I for the life of me can't remember which oil I used to put in mine.

Which forum did you post on? I'll ask on Corsa-c.co.uk if you like. Still a member and the technical help is usually good. They do know their stuff.

Had a think and the only things I can come up with are worn rings, headgasket or worn valve guides. Will muse it over tomorrow though when I'm a bit more awake and with it. Anything in the coolant bottle?

cheers for the input, went to my garage that i trust today for the chain but fortunately very honest and told me the chain and tensioners were quiet as anything.

It was the waterpump bearing, bizarre. so anyway that has been changed, the coolant changed, oil flushed, protection stuff added and then oil change.

    runs quietly now.

now the bad news. had new spark plugs too, on removal of the old ones, it is clear that oil is getting to them (cylinders 2 and 4)

They couldnt find anything wrong with it though, so hoping that the nice good quality oil and clean out will reduce the rate of consumption.

Just going to have to keep a real eye on the levels i think!

Dont think she wants to sell it mate, the garage weren't that overly worried about it either and were hopeful that the fresh oil will really help.

but yeah if the oil consumption gets really bad then its back to the drawing board.
