    Default whistling turbo

I have noticed that my turbo is making an over loud whistling noise over the last week or two. Does this mean its on its way out???

Hi, yeah by the sounds of it. My old veccy was a loud whistler, especially 1st thing in the morning. I was told it was due to having the wrong oil put in at some stage but wether that is true i dont know but still had to have a new 1 put on which grieved me because it still worked fine.

Is it worth getting an uprated turbo or just replacing it with the standard part? Is it also a proper pain to change on a 1.9CDTI SRI 150, 55 plate?

I had a standard 1 put back in, my mecanic charged me £120 to fit so wasn't worth getting my hands dirty. Dont think there meant to be that hard to do, but its too cold out there at the mo to be playing cars.

An exchange unit from VX should cost about £450, plus the parts to fit it and labour you may be looking at £800. If you leave it, it the bearing will likely start dumping progressively more oil into the engine and will eventually not boost anymore. If it failed catastrophically, it could cause engine run away, where the oil becomes fuel in the engine and it keeps running until the oil is gone. That could write of the whole engine.

You should be using a 5W-30 or 0W-30 and only fully synthetic. Anything thicker (10W-40 being a commonly listed diesel oil) could cause starvation of the turbo bearings and result in failure.

I bought a 2nd hand turbo on the manifold, it came out of a 08 plate with 23k. The turbo looked like brand new and I paid £150 delivered so not too bad.

As i haven't heard it i cant tell.
I would check your inter cooler pipes first for leaks, as these can make a similar noise.
