Default High level brake light flashes on and off?!?

    Hi everyone,

Recently bought a 2004 2.0dti manual estate which has a few issues that I am slowly trying to rectify but today one of my colleagues told me the high level brake light was flashing on the way home last night.

So we went out and put the key in the ignition and sure enough it flashes dimly every 5 seconds or so.

It does this whether the engine or lights are on or off but works fine, and glows brightly, when the brake pedal is pressed.

I have had a search through this forum but can't find anything, have any members any ideas why it could be happening?

    Thanks, Frank.

    +update+

Just been out in the car and the high level light is on all the time, as bright as rear lights, when the road lights are on but flashes dimly when engine running, lights off or engine off, ignition on.

    Sorry for any confusion.

    Cheers, Frank

Had a look at the wiring in the boot today and it has had a towbar fitted at some time with a relay fitted but lots of bits of tape, scotchlocks and pop riveted earths, would imagine the problem lies there.

The moral of this story is look as far as you can before wasting time on the forum asking for help when not checking it out yourself first, sorry guys.

Wasn't a waste of time, probably just had us all stumped! Are you going to remove the towbar?

I have just bought one but didn't bother to look at the boot wiring as I didn't imagine it would have had one fitted and then removed.
It also has the under floor mounting plates still in situ but not too sure if they are exactly the same as the new ones so will remove and refit the new towbar complete together with the new wiring and relay, at least that way I will know what I am starting with and hopefully sort out the brake light issue.

    Cheers, Frank.
