    Default Thermostat

Decided to change my thermostat today due to my temperature gauge struggling to get over 70, with the heaters on would drop to the bottom of the gauge!
Before changing it i decided to fit the new temp sender into the old housing, my heaters have always warmed up quickly and get red hot and my car has always been great on fuel, didnt even notice a massive difference during the colder weather we have had.
Anyway i took the car for a half hour run with heaters on number 2, to my surprise the temp gauge hit 85 and didnt move!
I decided to fit the new stat anyway and on checking the old one once removed, the stat was closed as it should have been!
    Baffled!

my 120 is the same mate,i get red hot heating and the car warms up very quickly and never go below high 40`s to the gallon but the temp needle goes up and down when it feels like it but i am reluctant to change the stat because as much as i have read i am still not convinced it`s goosed.

Thats what has got me wondering, are all the problems people are having a fault with the temp senders and not the thermostats? The thermostat i removed was closed as it should be and had all the symtems that everyone else had which people think is the stat, its got me thinking its the temp senders and not the stats at fault..

They just get old and open too quick.

My one was closed when I took it off but opened fully at about 60 degrees.

(to the OP) It sounds like your problem WAS the temp sensor. I had the same problem, except my stat was also failed. I fixed the stat, and my heaters started working better, but I couldn't understand why temp gauge was still not going up unless i left car idling for ages. So I changed CTS and problem solved. It seems that the resistance/temp gradient of the CTS can deteriorate in such a way that it only responds to high temperature. This can be baffling because it will cause exactly the symptoms of a failed stat.

I think 9 times out of 10 the symptoms will be caused by failed stat. As you say, its the heaters that give the clue. On the 1.8 which I have, It's cheaper to replace the stat and the CTS seperately, £11+£15, rather than whole unit including housing,£55.
Theres been a couple of threads about this recently, I am glad because when I was searching about my problem I couldn't find much about the CTS. I didn't realise it could fail but still give some signal, so it took me a while to puzzle it out.
