    Default Tyre wear advice needed

10 days ago during full-service was advised tyres were at 3mm today just 10 days later and 70 miles went to same garage for MOT. Failed as tyre under the 1.6mm. Is that possible to have worn down by so much so fast or should I question their original service? Advice please

not a garage i'd choose to use again. Has the tyre gone past the raised markers within the tread?

Just bang some new ones on as it's difficult to tell on here without seeing them to be fair.

Advice may have been wrong first time or second time as buisness may be slow and they want a sale.

I replace mine at 2mm minimum.

couldnt say to be fair. when he called he said front 2 were 3mm rear drivers 2.5mm and other rear 1.5mm in centre but 3mm on the edge. So failed, I mentioned that it was only 10 days since service and that i wouldnt have come for mot today if i didnt think it would pass based on the information he provided during the service. He is putting spare on car to get it through MOT and said he would do me a deal on tyres. I said it sounds like he's garage is mugging me off and he said he wasnt and to prove it he'll give me the tyres at cost price. Granted i need new tyres but I still have 28 days on old mot and only went in as i thought it would walk it.

I'd get the tyres as Bigtee says, as I never go to the markers either,.. but go somewhere else. Tell them thanks for the info, I'll have the tyres fitted..... elsewhere!!

A service is an inidcation of the tyre tread depth, usually a basic visual inspection
At MoT, the tester will look for the lowest tread depth, and anything below 1.6mm is an automatic failure on that point (any of the four tyres)

I always submit my cars with the front tyres worn below 2mm, the MoT issuing an advisory
However, I take the car away and return a few hours later

Tyres below 1.6mm are not an automatic 3 points per tyre
However, it is very likely to be considered for prosecution, and anything below 0.5mm may result in this
Equally, if there is no tread and the tyre construction material is showing an immediate prohibition is likely

if youre pulled over and found to have 3 bald tyres, you will get 3 points per defective tyre. You wil lalso recieve a £60 fine. This will also apply to the spare tyre in your boot.

The officer does have 'discretion' which applies to most pulls to be fair, but I for one am not keen on folk driving round on bald tyres and deserve the penalties stated if caught.
