    Default Anyone changed a 2.0 / 2.2dti turbo before?

I think my turbo casing is leaking oil into the actual turbo as I have been getting through oil and have noticed plenty of fresh oil leaking out the edge of the inter cooler hose. The car is going in for its MOT on Thursday so I have also asked the garage to have a look at the turbo as well and let me know if my diagnosis is correct. In the meantime I thought i'd ask if anyone on here has changed a 2.0 or 2.2dti turbo before? Its looks pretty accessible as its at the top of the engine and to the rear with plenty of space around it. To me it looks like it just bolts on!

The Haynes manual says the exhaust manifold has to come off first which it gives it a 4* rating which I'm not really happy about giving a go but to actually remove and replace the turbo gives it a 3* which is more within my ability. As we know the HAYNES can over complicate things and tell you to remove things first when actually you don't need to (door lock and air recirculating motor spring to mind).

So would I need to remove the exhaust manifold or is Haynes being over cautious again? Is this something I should tackle or leave to the garage? The only reason I'm contiplating doing this myself is that the bank account is extremely empty at the moment!

sounds like its in the same place as my turbo... its not that hard to, just fiddly.. I unbolted mine from the exhaust manifold but one of the studs sheared so then had to remove the manifold and take it to a bloke that removes snapped studs. I found a bloke who did it very quickly for £30 i think.. He put in a new stud and problem solved.. That was the only issue and quite a common one it seems.. If you wish to replace the turbo you will need to remove it from the exhaust manifold anyway..

Yes the 2.0dti uses the same turbo as the 2.2 and is in the same position. So I don't need to remove the actual exhaust manifold? The turbo is just bolted on?

mine is a different engine but from what i have seen of your block in the manual it looks like its in a easier position than mine was.. i would say that you should just unbolt the turbo from the manifold. i think the manual says to remove the turbo from the manifold if 'needed' meaning they are working on a complete engine strip down but you only want the turbo off.....

    I don't believe so. The 2.2 turbo is a variable vane one, the 2.0 isn't I don't think.

had it in for its MOT and asked the garage to look at the turbo and they said its fine. What a relief but its still a mystery why I'm getting through oil!
