Default Brake light - driving me mad

    Can anyone help?

From reading previous posts I understand that when I brake the top light (excluding indicator) on each side at the rear should come on...

They do, but on the passenger side the tail light also comes on with it, so I have three brake lights instead of two if that makes sense. The manual says that if the brake light is defective, the relevant tail light takes over the brake light function, so it appears the car thinks the rear pax brake light if defective - when it isn't.

Because of this I always have the brake warning light come up on the dash.

I have replaced all the bulbs at least twice and also changed the rear passenger side light holder, but still two lights come on on that side when I brake.

Can anyone suggest anything else to try?

This saga is still ongoing. A mechanic who deals with this kind of thing has tested and fixed all the wires and still can't get to the route of it. Apparently the previous owner had fitted a tow bar and as a result played around with a lot of the electrics?

As expected there is a permanent feed down both the wire to the brake light, and to the tail light. When a wire was run from the feed for the drivers side lights it did stop, but the dash warning light stayed on.

He's now going to attempt to put a variable resistor on the wire as this might stop the tail light coming on as it currently thinks the brake light isnt working?

Back from the garage - still not fixed! Apparently it might be something to do with the light module control unit (never heard of it).

I've changed every bulb at least twice - really bugging me now!

Hi. Just to say a year on I still have this problem. On the left side both the tail light and the brake light come on and the warning light on the dash is permanently on.

I've changed the all the bulbs a few times over and also the bulb holder. Anyone else ever had this problem?

You should have two tail lights per side, and one brake light per side - which will be the upper of the two tail lights.

If the upper tail / brake light fails, then the lower tail light takes over the role of tail / brake light.

Are all the tail lights working?

    Cheers for the reply Dave,

Yeah all bulbs work. The problem is that on the passenger side the bottom tail light comes on with the brake light (as if it thinks the bulb above it isn't working - make sense?).
