Service is usually very poor in most areas. I had Virginmobile Broadband and when ever I needed it most I had little or no signal. I would see if you could tether your mobile phone to your laptop and use its allowance if you have it. I have tethered my Blackberry to my laptop which is with Virginmobile so at least I do not have an extra cost of the dongle every month.
I only use my iPhone internet when i'm at home so i can connect to the router. O2 charge too much for internet access on my phone so i told them i didn't want it.
Depends on your reception area, but I use 3 you can get sims on ebay at about a tenner for 3month 3Gb/total
I've got a T-Mobile dongle.
£20 to buy and £2 a day (I only use it occasionally, otherwise you can get a discount for paying for several days at a time)
I'm really happy with mine, get a decent signal in most places I go, particularly as I picked up a USB extension lead, so I can hang the dongle in the window if the reception isn't great.
The best advice I can give is to check out the service providers network coverage in your area. By this, I mean, if at all possible, try out friends dongles first, before committing to any particular network.
The reason I say this is that I took out a contract with "3" after being advised by their sales staff that I would receive an "excellent" 3g connection, which turned out to be a load of rubbish.....it was basically un-usable in my area, and then had months of wrangling with them before they eventually agreed to end the contract. I'm not saying that their service is poor in all areas but in my case it was.
I am now currently with Orange, and I am delighted with the service I am receiving from them. The cost is £10 per month which gives me up to 2gb ( 1gb anytime and 1gb quiet time). I find this deal perfect for my mobile internet needs, its perfect for plenty of browsing/email usage. Hope this helps.
i'm with orange mate, work away from home most weeks and compared to the guys i work with who are on a variety of different providers mine is the most reliable... and we work in some remote areas to say the least
im with o2 and its pretty good in most places ive been to, infacr im away an currently using it this minute.
ive also had 3 and t- mobile and found them to be very poor, the t mobile 1 never worked if i was inside a building or wteva
