    Default Temperature Gauge problem

    Hi All
    My first post.
    I have 02 18 LS petrol.
The problem I have is with the Temp gauge. It started back in November when I stalled the car and the coolant warning light came and the temp gauge dropped to 0. I had the car checked and was told the coolant level sensor was shot. I got that changed, but the temp gauge was still not working. I then noticed that there was very little heat coming from the blowers. I then took the car to local VX specialist who changed the stat. The temp gauge started to work, but took an age to register. It would finally sit between 80/85 deg’s. The problem was I was still getting very little heat from the blower and the gauge would drop when the blowers were on. Last week the stat was changed again and the blowers are working fine. The gauge however now does move at all when driving, but will gradually rise to 90 deg’s when the car is idling.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm interesting one this, initally i would of said it's the stat, but as you have had two, it can't be. How far do you travel? is it only a short distance, or does the gauge not move on a motorway run of say 20 mins?

The syptom of the gauge rising when left idling for some time but not when driving does suggest the stat, this one has me baffled!

    Thanks for the quick replies.

I have taken the car for a run, around trip of 40 miles and still the gauge doesn't move.

How do I know whether there is airlock?
The top hose to the stat is red hot bottom hose to the rad is freezing. Should the top hose of the coolant bottle be pouring coolant back into the bottle?

Did you get the stat done at a VX dealer? Does the thermostat housing look new?

Just wondering if its the temp sender unit that is at fault. Ive noticed that some of the housing units come without a sender unit, meaning they have to swap the old one over. Worth asking them if this is the case and trying a new one if indeed they did swap the old one over.

Once the stat opens the top hose to the rad should be hot and the bottom hose should be cooler but not freezing. It it normal for coolant to flow into the expansion bottle when the engine is running.
