    Default 2012 MOT changes!

Hey guys, just thought i would share this with you. I know people have mentioned changes to the MOT coming up regarding HID's, the self leveling systems and tuning boxes, i didnt believe it at first and thought it was a wind up. Was having a look around the VOSA website and found this magazine for testing stations which confirms on 1st January 2012 these changes will be implemented: http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repositor...Oct%202010.pdf Page 8&9 cover it.

doesnt say it happening tho says they are looking into it as a testable item

Other items – such as headlamp
    bulb and unit incompatibility,
    headlamp levelling devices and
illegal engine ‘chipping’ – will need
further thought before we can get
    a workable solution for MOT
    stations.

    Where does it say that?

    All I can see is:

There is no way a MOT station can see a remap and if you have a tuning box they will just take it off for the MOT. Same for the HID's. People will just fit normal bulbs for the MOT.

The beginning of the article below states it will be happening, they just have to find a way of adding it to the current test the hardest part will be how they will find out if you are running a remap or chip as they call it.

The new Directive keeps the EU
    minimum 4-2-2 test frequency but
adds a number of new elements to
the British MOT test. The Directive
    anticipates all test changes being
in place by 1 January 2012, and
    a common European approach
to test certificates in place by
1 January 2014. So what is VOSA
    doing to introduce the changes?

Have a click on the link on the first post, your right about the bulbs and tuning box just being removed for the test to get a pass, i think they have there heart set on finding a way of checking for remaps.

They wont. And the other thing to consider, is if testers start plugging in diagnostic eqpt etc and your car develops a fault, the first place you go is back to them. This could cost an awful lot of money, mostly by dishonest people, but if they do start mucking around with diagnostic ports they will open such a can of worms it just won't be worth the hassle. Just can't see it happening.

There is another point to all this make makes it totally unworkable.

I don't know of a single re-map that alters any parameters for the car when on idle, which is where the emmisions test is done. On diesel they have to rev it to get the temperature up but the reading itself is taken on idle.

So this is just the EU trying to meddle with things again.

In France and Belgium, it is illegal to modify the engine on your car, it has to remain standard. Now in Germany they have no such laws, just like the UK you have no rules as long as it pass's an MOT.

So as long as Germany (Who are a big player in the EU) don't outlaw engine modifications checking for re-maps will never happen.

    What he said.....

Surley if it was an illegal practice, insurance company's wouldn't insure you. On what basis could they possibly make it illegal anyway...as long as emissions are correct wich are already tested, I can't see there being any reason.
