Default An expensive day today .... but have I been conned?

    Hi all,
I popped into a tyre place in Chesham today to have my two replacement wheels fitted and to have my Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres fitted to them.

Well bug*er me sideways if there wasn't a blo0dy nail in my rear tyre.

I was told that it's not repairable not happy as you can imagine and £270 later I had a new tyre fitted.

When I collected the car I asked another fitter if it could have been repaired as the nail had only just breached the inner tyre.

He said..... "we can repair it but we don't gaurantee it for the life of the tyre" So I said why was this not offered to me as an option as I would have probably had it repaired (£20) not replaced (£270)

Anyway not all gloom and doom.... I took out the 2 year puncture and tyre replacement insurance from VX for £99 and they cover up to £200 per tyre so it has cost me £70 not £270.

Still feel like I was robbed though. I have kept the tyre and will get it repaired and either keep as a spare or sell on as its got 7mm of flippin tread on it

Thanks for listening to my moan

    Jon

I'd keep it as a spare but that looks close to the sidewall. If it's too close it's said that the cornering and movement of the tyre will make it leak and they normally say it's not repairable.

Were you conned? You bought tyres at a VX dealer? I'd say they would be expensive compared to other places, they are around here anyway.

It wasn't from a VX dealer it was at a branch of Black Boots.

However I was in Burnham VX the other day and they will beat ANY price on tyres fully fitted by 10%

Worth looking into if you need some tyres.

Some repairs are classed as illegal iirc, not sure how they would find out though, also there is the safety factor.

More chance of it blowing out going in to a corner it's due to a safety law they can only patch it if it's a certain distance away from the edge mate

My wife had a nail appeared in a similar place, the local tyre place said due to how close it was to sidewall, they couldn't do it, but they could send it away for a major repair (£25). As it had only done a few hundred miles she had it fixed.

I'll look into what can be done re a repair. It is almost new and quite sickening to see such an expensive tyre scrapped

that can be sent away for a specialist repair and will be roughly £25-30 to complete if its within the 75% of the centre of the tyre and standard plug will suffice - outside this area (which from the photo this looks like) then its normally a galvanised/reinforced repair which is requried...

I'd not like a repair that close to the wall on my car,... and how is it that nails only find your tyres when they are new?????

at my old work we would have done a major repair on that no problem. involves bufffing the inside around the nail down to the cords. then vulcanising a new repair patch over the damaged area with heat pads. witch also includes cords makes for a very strong repair
