Question Loud Grinding Noise When Braking?

    Hi Guys,

I've recently noticed a loud grinding noise coming from the rear of the car when I brake.

It started yesterday and is getting worse - and if I open the window when I'm driving slowly without braking I can hear a "screeching" noise from rear offside wheel.

I took the rear offside wheel off and its really difficult to turn the disc with the handbrake off and no brake applied - and when it does turn there the noise is again.

I had the 2 year service 2 weeks ago and they told me the brakes were in very good condition and didn't need anything doing.

I checked again and the disc is fine and there is about 25% left on the pad.

    Any ideas?

Have you checked both outside and inside pads? The insides are known to wear quicker

Yep - check the inside pads. Bets the garage only looked at the outer pad.

Top Gear Top Tip - buy the pad and disc kit. Pads alone are about £48, pads and disc kit is about £88, discs alone are about £160! Go figure!

My rear brakes were grinding for ages before i changed them. Then it came back and sounded like the rear when the front were needing done.

Sounds like worn rear pads. Had exactly the same on mine, and they were down to about 1mm. One was on the bare metal! New pads and back to normal

Don't think brake pads will be covered under any warranty as it wear and tear / consumable parts.

I had new pads fitted to both rear wheels on my last Vec for £90 including labour at a vauxhall dealer so hopefully will be around the same price now...

When and how was the car purchased?

It would be best to have the issue checked
The OE warranty will cover discs and calipers
The disadvantage with replacement discs is you may be asked to pay for the pads, but quite often they agree to include them
Equally, if a caliper has failed they only pay for the one that failed, not both

As above, if the inside pads have worn then that is quite normal

The rear pads are really cheap, even on the 3.0 V6 CDTI they are only £25, but the dealerships charge at least 1 hours labour (about £60)
Check the discs for grooves and excessive lip on the edge, replacements will add up to £60 (virtually no difference in labour costs)

I bought the car from a Vauxhall Arnold Clark on 7th January 2010 - only had 10'000 miles on the clock.

Had for 1 year 1 month now and now has 24'000 miles on the clock.
