What are these ?

Yep, as said above Phil, they are non-return valves

I ''think'' ive heard people say these can be parted & cleaned as sometimes they get a little bit of crap in them.

The best way to check if the valves are working is with the engine off pump your brake pedal, after four or five pumps on the pedal the brake pedal will become harder to push down (the brake servo will have used up all the vacuum stored in it) if the valves are not working the servo will not hold any vacuum with the engine off and the pedal will be firm almost straight away.
