yellow Oil can light on dash

Hi guys,

can you help me,

when starting the car and turning off, i get an yellow oil can with a spanner through it on the rev counter, goes off after a minute, checked the oil and it was low, put 1.5 ltrs of oil in and i cant read the dip stick very well as oil isall up the steam, Im worried about over filling! yet the light is still on?

Looked around the engine and cannot see any obvious oil leaks , non under the car or in the engine bay. Can a 1.9 cdti burn this much oil? car does about 20miles a day, mostly A roads 50-60 (not thrashed very much)

Sounds like you need to top up the engine oil. Check the dip stick level as soon as possible.

Ps I have a fault code reader, so plugged it in and no fault codes were recorded, any suggestions?

have taken the dip stick in and out several times i think i put oil all up the stem so it smears when the dip stick is removed, so i will go out and check it again in a minute or two.

where would all the oil go?

It could be a faulty switch. most fault code readers will only read a few faults, not all of the massive range of possibilities!

What I've read on this forum the oil/spanner light comes on before and after engine switch off/on when below 1000 miles to next service and will stay on constanly when below 100 miles
You can check by pressing and holding odometer reset button

Did it have 1000 under the icon? If so it means you are due a service in 1000 miles.

Im not sure, the symbol is right but the full size with no text underneath, having said that when I hold the pin in i get 105 come up on the odometer

- I brough the car two years ago, fourth hand and the servicing history has long gone I have done two oil and filters changes myself. first week of Dec just a habit and its easy to remember ( hence only recently changed the oil) I had no idea the car had a service interval. Is it possible to reset the service interval or set it for the next one?

On the subject of oil, guilty - over filled it alot! drained it all out tonight and put the right amount back in!

Ive posted it here so that anyone else with a similar problem could give it a go also!

now got 15K miles to go until it hopefully comes back - just enough time to forget what it is again!
