Default GUNGE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST. "Emissions?".

I hope I don't upset anyone with this post but I require some expert info ASAP.
My son has just bought a Transit van,2.5 diesel. It's a "P" reg and the true mileage is in doubt. It drives ok and there are no obvious signs or sounds that there could be anything seriously wrong mechanically for it's age. However,I left it ticking over on the drive on Saturday for about 15 mins, and when I came back to it,there was a black spray pattern from the exhaust, all over the drive. Can anyone tell me what the significance of this is,and what,if anything, can be done. FELIXX.

I don't really know yet.I had an oil/filter change done on Saturday morning, then took it into Trafford Park to the Waggon Wash to get it cleaned,(it's got a high line roof). When I checked the oil this morning,it was just under the full mark, and I don't know whether they actually filled it to the full mark or just stuck the recommended amount in when they did the job. Keep an eye on it. It may just be someone has filled the exhaust with water and it's comming out complete with the carbon and soot build ups.

You know,it's funny that you should say that as I thought the same thing at the time.It does look just like water!!.It's dried a sooty colour and isn't "oily" when you touch it.I don't know, friggin cars and vans, they're as bad a kids, they drive you mad at times. Thanks for all your help anyway,I'll give it a good run in the week,so I'll know one way or the other eventually.FELIXX.

It could just be moisture getting blown out with soot if it's been idling. Has the van stood for any period of time? My advice would be to give it a good hard run (motorway??) to blow any muck through the system

Also, as previously said, keep an eye on oil and wayer levels

I will,I hope to give it a blast sometime this week. When I checked the oil and water levels when he bought it,the coolant bottle felt like it hadn't been off since the thing was built!!.I honestly thought I would have to get a pair of pipe grips on it to get it undone. When they did the oil change they got it up on the ramp and gave it a good looking at.The mechanic, who I know quite well, seems to think it's fine for it's age.Anyway,it stands him nothing,as it was bought as part of a load of music equipment for outdoor stage sets that was worth around £12k and he only paid £5k for,so if it gives up next week he's lost nothing, talk about jammy!!,me,on the other hand,if I fell in a barrel load of t**s,I'd come up sucking my thumb!!.
