    Default 3.0 cdti

How far can you go with the v6 lump? i have heard there is not a lot you can do to them but surely its just an engine and its the ecu thats spoiling the fun?

I fancy losing the EGR altogether and getting a nice map (400lbft anyone?)

Having played with many petrol turbo engines over the last few years i fail to see why i cant have a good ol' tinker with a diesel to get at the extra torque just waiting to be unleashed

Its the hp fuel pump thats the weak link. They have been known to fail and they are a couple of grand each!

Although the earlier ones (y30dt) are better than the later ones (z30dt), they seem to be able to cope with it a bit better.

It depends on what you want to do with it
Personally I drive it "as is", as I do with all my vehicles
If I had wanted something with better performance, then I would have bought that instead

The original EMS is set very conservatively, aimed at reduced emissions
This can be replaced for improved MPG, at the cost of higher emssions (still enough to pass the MoT, but officially requires notification to VOSA for a change in emissions rating)
If you change the EMS settings for performance, then as above you vastly reduce the life of the fuel pump and consequentially the transmission system

Leave as it is. They're a rubbish engine in standard form and with added power they enjoy blowing up even more (pump - couple of k, cylinder liners - new engine,...)

This engine has been the best I have ever owned...
The most reliable compared to anything else I have owned so far, getting to 95K miles before a minor issue was encountered which was fixed

The main issues are the VX items!

The worst car was also a VX, getting to 70K miles and suffering a permanent engine fault that was never fixed in the final 18 months of ownership
The next worst was the Mondeo, getting to 120K miles and suffering a failed engine
