Default Engine cut out, won't restart

Evening all, have had an issue today, and wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone had experienced similar problems.
54 reg cdti150 estate Vec, Car has given me no real issues outside of the egr and swirl flaps, which were both sorted 15k miles ago, since then car has been sweet, Went from Basingstoke to Portsmouth this morning, no problems whatsoever, car was parked in Portsmouth for 8 hours, on the drive home, noticed a little hesitation once or twice at about 2k rpm on the trip back, sitting in heavy traffic, traffic cleared after Winchester, and had a good run up the M3, came off a Basingstoke, the lights at the end of the slip road were red, so I coasted up to them, they changed as I approached, so I dropped into 3rd and went to pull away at about 40mph, accelerated fine for a second or so, then it cut out, so I managed to coast it off the motorway link onto the side of the A30, where it wouldn't restart, I've had a quick look, but with it being dark and pi**ing down with rain, I couldn't really see much, AA came out and relayed me home, he plugged his code reader in, and no faults, apologies for writing war and peace, long and short is Car cut out, and won't restart, If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them,

    Thanks for you time

There are one of two things which spring to mind right away:

    - 3rd injector plug needs replaced. (It usually causes hesitation before shutting the engine down altogether. To check unplug the injector connection (providing it's yellow as this means it's not been upgraded). Have a look if it's dirty 'blow' on it plug it back in. The engine may start but the plug needs to be changed as it will only get worse - book it in.

    - Or as your car is a 54 plate it could be the throttle plate. There is a fault with the earlier CDTI's. Cracked solder joints in the throttle position sensing circuit cause the ECU to think that you have switched the engine off. This momentarily closes the throttle plate and opens it again. If it has done this and you have immediately tried to restart it, the vacuum will have formed and forced the valve closed. However this situation is always unlikely as the pressure would return.

I would stick with the 3rd injector plug. Think the fix is about £80 at a dealer and I recommend all 4 get done as injector plugs 2 and 4 won't be far behind.

Wow, some quick replies, I see I'm not the only person up at this time on a school night,
Right, It is turning over, but it won't catch and run, so I'm sure its not the belt, It was changed along with the waterpump about 15k ago, the only warrning light is the car/spanner light, and the 3rd injector plug was done shortly before I got the car in september 08, the only mods I've done are the airbox and fitted a homemade fiat style egr gasket about 15k ago, which has not caused any problems, and I snapped a lug off the vacuum tank, when I fitted a new inlet manifold, and on the advice of a vauxhall spanner man, I removed the vacuum tank, and fitted a silicon tube and connected the vacuum pump directly to the solenoid, the only problem I can remember having is last winter when all the big snow was down, I was getting the spanner light on start up, so I changed out the glowplugs and it stopped immediately. Other than that its been brilliant, key in and go. I'll be having a look at the throttle plate in the morning, but from what I've read it would cause rough running, not no running, I'll also check the intercooler and associated pipework, but again, i would expect poor running and loads of smoke, as opposed to not running at all

Check the other injector plugs if they haven't been done.

Other than that, blocked fuel filter? Have you checked the throttle plate? To do this take the boost hose off of the throttle body and have a look. It should be sitting open. If not, that's the problem.

If you can get it read by Op Com then I believe you will get some fault codes.

Gazza, Thanks for the ideas, the fuel filter was changed about 2k ago, when I did an oil service, along with the air filter, Its also only done 145 miles out of a full tank, so its not low on juice, and it was definately diesel that went in.

I'll check out the throttle plate in the morning, and see if anythings occuring with that, I haven't got access to op-com, so if anyone in the Basingstoke/Tadley area fancies a cup of tea/beer/something stronger and can plug me in, that would be great.

    Cheers

Out of interest see if it starts with the MAF sensor disconnected. You never know.

Its the belt, its shaved off about 6mm from around the entire length of the belt, and I think one of the pieces has got caught under the belt and lifted it off the pulley causing the timing to slip, its all still connected, so I'm now praying that its only moved a couple of teeth so not caused any interference between valvews and pistons, the engine still turns by hand with no nasty clonks and bangs, so fingers crossed, I'll stick a new belt and pulleys on and try it. At least i've got a nice clean throttle body and egr, and re soldered joints in the tps now, shame the rest of it doesn't work.

    Cheers
