Default an idea to test an egr

If you suspect your egr is giving you poor running issues i.e hesitating etc, would it not be possible to leave the mechanical side of the egr on the manifold and unbolt the electromagnet side off to stop the egr opening the valve ? that way you know the valve is shut but not getting stuck during its operation ?

im guessing the egr opens on lift off etc ? So it shouldnt cause too much of an issue driving it like this ... just a thought

Would still give an EML as the ECU monitors the MAP sensor and looks for a chnage in vacuum when the EGR is commanded to open.
So whilst the idea will work as such it is no more effective then just unplugging the EGR connector.

The common problem is that the egr valve sticks in the open position and whilst cleaning the valve can sometimes help prolong it, the only real way is to replace.

just for info and as i understand it, before any smart *ss trys to rip my post apart, an egr valve opens when the ecu determines that the temperature of the ignition stroke has reached a certain value and then allows inert exhaust gases into the combustion chamber to lower the temperature of the burn. This is done to meet emission standards by reducing NOx that are produced at high temperatures. So it would seem that a valve when permenantly stuck open, would give the classic poor running when cold or below a certain rpm that so many owners have experienced.

Oddly that's it. On idle they are shut, between 1,000-2,000rpm they are open. Before anyone rips that post apart that's what a diesel specialist told me.
