    Default EGR Valve

    Hi guys

My old man has not long bought an 06 3.0cdti signum.. The thing is its only got 6000 miles on it and as we were driving home in it today, the engine management light came on and it would rev to 1000rpm all on its own..

We took it down to the stealers who diagnosed the EGR valve and are going to replace it under warranty for us.

The thing is.. how can this have become faulty so soon??? and what can we do to prevent it happening again in the future please??

    Any advice gratefully received

    Thanks

    Darren

Just one of those things mate. Just because things are new, doesn't mean they will last. You've just been unlucky and the chances are that when the new one is fitted, it'll never go wrong again. Anyway, good luck with it

On the older ecotec engines you could make up a blanking plate out of thin steel and use it like a gasket,as long as the egr valve stayed connected it never threw a spanner light and the engine was less hesitant and it also never effected the emissions enough to worry about

I would doubt you could get away with it now though

Like Gary said..just because it's new, doesn't mean it's going to be reliable and give long term service. All batches of parts run the risk of having a duff component in them.

let them fit a new one and hopefully it will be fine for the rest of the cars life. there is nothing i know of in the way of a regular fault with the EGR valve.

They used to go wrong all the time when the cars were a few years old usually gummed up with soot etc. As said you were just unlucky i reckon!

The main use for them was to re-burn the exhaust gasses to help reduce NOX emmisions. Not sure if that gas is part of the Mot these days or not?

sounds to me like they are trying to delay repairing the fault until the car has reached beyond its 1 year life. That way it may be out of warranty so making you responsible for the bill. Labour charge on a 3.0cdti is huge!! Instead of just blagging you, they should just go ahead and change the egr valve.
