Default Probably need to get the radiator replaced.

I have a leak in the bottom left hand corner of my radiator as you face the front of the car. I need to put about ½ litre of coolant/water mix in every 3 weeks or so. I’m nearly sure I have to replace the radiator as the leak is quite noticeable along where the plastic and metal meets. Its like the metal has corroded and I can see the fluid forming at the bottom of the rad.

My question is do I need to replace the radiator or is there anything that can be done to save the existing one?

Mine was the leaking from the same place but only as steam/vapour. A new radiator is the only way to go imo. I personaly would not use rad weld or similar.

Is radiator replacement a difficult DIY job? I think mine has gone the same way as you describe above.

Its a fairly straight forward job, but will take some time if you have not done anything like it before.
I bought the Haynes manual and it took me through the steps, it covers everything.
You need axel stands to take the rad out through the bottom.

I would recomend you buy the Haynes manual and see from what they say if you thinkn you will be able to do it.

Cheers, guys. I enjoy working on cars and have been doing so and restoring classics for about twenty years, on and off. I have the Haynes but it doesn't cover the GSi. But looking at it, it doesn't look to be a difficult job.

Just got to get the radiator now... Any suggestions?

I got my rad from http://www.northernradiators.co.uk/
It worked out the cheapest when ordering from Ireland.
Delivery cost may affect your choice if you reside in England.
