glowplug light

hi guys

In the mornings when i start the car the glowplug light is on very briefly but the car starts sluggishly, but if i only go a short distance half mile and stop the cars glowplug light does not come on and starting is a bit lenghty.is this normal because the car is warm enough to start without glowplugs, and it still seems sluggish until turbo kicks( noticed in service history that the egr valve was changed) in and mpg is rubbish even when i drive like miss daisy

Probably you have one or more than likely two glow plugs that have gone faulty.I lived with a similar symptoms as you for two years with no real deficency with just one plug faulty then late last year things got worse and i changed all the glow plugs and found two were u/s.
If you have access to a multimeter you can usually tell which ones are faulty by measuring the resistannce across the tip of the gp and earth ,high resistance = faulty
