look in the how 2 section under " fitting an irmscher gear knob "

be careful when you take it off as the spring tends to fly off and you need this for the reverse gear lever

Another one - I ended up with the thing in my hand last night, as I was changing up. Gave me a bit of a shock at the time. the spring popped off too.

Got home changing gear with the stump then reassembled everything on the drive once there.

If this happens often, and reading the above it does seem common, I think a drop of Loctite nutlock or similar on the splines may help.

The historical precedent is Keke Rosberg in F1 (Nico's dad for the younger F1 fans on here!) who finished a Grand Prix in 1982 (I think?) changing gear with the shaft and the knob rolling around his pedals. His hand was raw by the end of the race, and he never knew when braking for a corner if the loose ball was going to be under the brake pedal or jamming the throttle linkage...... brave guy.
