    Default 1.9 CDti negativity?

    Chaps,
Ive read a fair few reviews (honest john/Parkers etc) regarding the Vectra C and especially the 1.9 cdti. Then Ive looked about on here. There seems to be alot of negativity regarding the 1.9 derv engine, and as I'm seriously thinking about one I'm doing my homework as I don't want a money pit of a car...

So then, my question is this.....

Is the 1.9 cdti 150 really as bad as alot on here make out?

My plan is to buy the lowest mileage/newest car I can but to be totaly honest, I'd not bother if it's gonna cost me a fortune as I really can't afford big repair bills...

    Your thoughts?

    Vehicle : Vectra Hatchback

    Mileage : 166000

well i swear by them but other people dont like them atall tbh you need to do your homework and know how to check for common problems, also you want to buy a car that has been serviced properly and looked after properly and tbh lowest mileage isnt always best, imho a 20k round town car is a much worse buy that a car thats done 80k up and down motorways, the engine will generally be in a better state and give you less problems.

i work at vauxhall and have 2 z19dth vectras in my family, my dads and my own, my dads has done about 60k and mine has just clocked over 139k and my dad prefers driving mine to his, it goes better and even before the coilovers handles better and i think the main reason is his was used alot round london, in traffic whereas mine tramped up and down the motorway, and at work we generally see cars that have done 200k without missing a beat.

one of the biggest things are the dual mass flywheels but in all honesty i consider them a consumable component because no matter what vehicle or engine they are fitted to by nature of their design they wear out. if its been driven properly and taken for a run regularly the dpf and egr shouldn't cause too many problems and the only other main thing to check for is the inlet manifold which is easy to check tbh

yes they do have their problems, but for as many problems they have their good points, not many engines can give low emissions, high fuel economy and a very decent turn of speed and this is indeed one of them

So are all the common faults tied to the Vectra, or the 1.9 lump in general (astra etc)?

    Penfold, that makes sense!

Exactly, more cars = more faults..

Unfortunatly they are all cursed by the common problems - which in essance are very expensive to fix!

1.9 in general, it's the same with anything, the more are produced the more chance of issues, it's used throughout VX, SAAB etc all GM.

Yeah agreed. Ive also been looking at Mondeo ST tdci's. They seem to suffer a few common problems too, ie EGR (dont all cars now?), injectors etc. Can be expensive too. Thing is, I'm a sucker for a handsome car too, and they are both certainly that!

I think what will seal the deal so to speak is gonna be a back to back test drive of them both...
