    Default Help with Hatch.

    Hi everyone,
Having a tailgate problem with my 06 Vectra ie:- its not opening had it in a local garage but to no avail they couldn't source the problem, i was promptly advised to take it to a dealer . If i had copious amounts of cash i would have taken there in the first place, unfortunatelyi don't have a spare £500 to throw at it. Mechanic changed fuses climbed in through back seats etc, he thinks it may be a control unit.

I guess im in need for help anyone had the same problem if so how do i go about the repair please please im at the end of my tether, isn't it strange how you rely on your boot so much.

I would be so grateful of any help.

    Many Thanks

    Davy

just wondering if your problem is the same as the one i had. basically, when i pushed the button on the tailgate there was no corresponding 'whirring' noise & popping open of the tailgate. i took it to the dealers & they said it would cost about £30 for parts, then labour on top of that, cant remember how much time they quoted.

i used some electrolube, which seemed to work for a while, but after a good while the tailgate totally failed to open.

i took the decision to get a new lock after finally taking the old one out & testing it on the bench. cost me a few hours of fiddling, but the brand new £30 lock has been working a treat since. theres a small micro switch next to the lock which could also be your problem, but i didnt replace mine.

i suggest you consult your handbook, or do a search on here to find out how to open the tailgate from the inside if the locks totally failed.

thanks for your reply kentish i will have a look at the lock. Had a read through the handbook but nothing definitive referred me to fuses and door control units.

Mine briefly locked itself closed, whilst open, manual reset was required
The same can also happen when closed

    Try this :
Press the boot open button, from inside the car
Do the number plate lights come on?
If they do, then the boot should open
If they do not, then that button may have failed

Depending on answer, will move to next step

ok, if you are having trouble opening the tailgate (you havent said what body style you have, im assuming a hatch) you can use this method to open it if the button does not work.

if you release the back seats & have a look at the inside of the tailgate trim, youll see a circular grommet located centrally, just above where the lock is. remove this grommet (it should come out easily when persuaded by a flat bladed screwdriver). behind the grommet you should see a square socket about 10mm square, with a slot in it. using a flat bladed screwdriver in the slot, rotate it & the boot should release, allowing you to open the tailgate to enable you to remove the trim & replace the lock.

i found that i had to have a fiddle around with the position of the microswitch (which is operated by the button) to get the lock working reliably, this may be the problem youre having, try this 1st. if you have no luck, replacing the lock is the next stage. i only replaced my lock because it had totally failed & was no longer locking.
