Default Urgent help req'd! Gearbox gasket!

    Hi guys!

Was renewing the gearbox oil on my 1.8 petrol Veccy (supposed to be "lifetime" oil with no service interval, but I decided it wouldn't hurt).

There's no drain plug on the F17 gearbox, so you have to remove the diff cover plate to drain the oil. Done this, but the paper gasket is damaged!

Not got another one and it's going to be a pain getting to a dealer...

Anyone used instant gasket on something like this?

I got the gasket from the stealers for about £4. Such a PITA that there's no drain/plug or filler hole.

    Yeah, what a stupid design!

Drain by removing the diff cover and making a fantastic mess of me, my tools and my floor, then fill by removing the reverse light switch! WTF?!

God knows why there are drain and fill plugs on all the other boxes, but not the F17...

Been there twice today, once for some parts and then again to pick up the clutch return spring which I managed to lose in the car-park! Wish I'd thought about it...

Unfortunatly, without the car I can't get to the stealers and I don't think it will like being driven without transmission oil!

DON'T use instant gasket. Go to a motor factors and get some gasket paper and cut your gasket from it.

Because it probably won't form a tight enough seal...and if the oil comes out whilst you're driving, you won't know until the gearbox goes bang-pop-whoosh.
