That is indeed a no. 1 dress uniform. It is not exclusive to the paras, it is worn generally by all regts/corps for ceremonial duties. It is not issued to soldiers with their 1157 (complete kit list), but is sort of wheeled out and dusted off for the event, then packed away again in the QM stores til next time. The 'cr4p hat' that you see them wearing in that picture is a no.1 dress hat which IS issued and is usually worn with the no.2 dress uniform (again, included with the kit), however special forces wear their beret with no.2 dress (you will hear special forces, particularly the Paras, calling non special forces 'cr4p hats').

Gary, who are the "special forces" then? I always thought that they were the SAS, but are the PARAs and Marines in there too?

Thanks for that Gary, so would this be the uniform a para would wear to his own wedding? (if he wanted) If so, would it be worn with a beret or 'cr4p hat'?

They are indeed Ian, because of the specialist roles they undertake. There are elements within the two units that are a nye on dammit like the SAS, these are the mountain and arctic warfare cadre of the Royal 'Maureens' as the Paras like to call them, This is an EXTREEEEEMELY demanding course and it has been said that it is AS hard as SAS selection. Then there is Pathfinder Platoon who work with 16 Air Assault Brigade. Their job is to covertly insert (ooer misses) in order to identify key targets, mark out DZ's (drop zones) for the main assault brigade etc etc. they can go in by Air (HALO drop or Low level), vehicle or foot. A great many of these guys usually go on to pass SAS and SBS selection. The SAS practice an 'art' called 'canopy jumping', which involves the aircraft 'hedge hopping' across the top of the tree tops in the jungle and the troopers just jump straight out onto the canopy top (tree tops)which is so dense it breaks their fall. As you can imagine, there have been things other than falls broken. So there you have it, a potted guide to special forces of which we have THE BEST in the world. I won't say that none come close cos they do, but they ain't as good.

He could indeed if he so wished and it would be wearing his beret. The paras don't posess such a disgusting piece of attire

Im not in the forces but thinking about doing it. Thought about the Royal Navy but wold rather do the paras for the challenge I think. Was at a wedding last weekend & my mate is in the Royal 'Maureens' who was getting married so just though I would ask what uniform the paras wore
