Default Help with the Alternator (using How2)

    Hi all,

Hope someone can help me. I'm guessing my alternator is dead ... 1.9CDti Vectra 150 2007 36,000 miles.

Today the car died and wouldn't start, click very fast clicking noise. Got jump leads on the battery and started ok but no electrics ... no power steering, no indicators etc and a disco lights on the dashboard. Would you say that's that alternator ?

I'm using the How2 to remove the alternator. Got the airbox off and I've loosed the tensioner with a 15mm spanner.

    Q. Do I take this nut all the way out or just loosen it ?
    Q. Standing in front of the car, which way does the tensioner have to move to loosen the belt ? It feels absolutely solid to me.

    Help most appreciated.

Yeah the wife was driving it today said the battery light was on her whole journey. Then after she parked and turned off ignition it was dead and wouldn't restart. When I put the jump leads on the car started fine but electrics were out - was enough to get home. Car won't start at all now unless jumped.

yes its your alternator mate, mine did the same. I didnt buy a new one, i got mine checked and it could be repaired. The rectifiers are a common failure, thats also what mine was.
As for the tensioner, you dont need to loosen it, put the 15mm spanner on the pulley nut and turn it clockwise and the tensioner will rotate and loosen the belt. So if your looking at the engine, with the spanner pointing up, you need to pull it towards you.
Its easy to remove the belt but awkward to refit, you may need an extra pair of hands to feed the belt onto the pulley while you release the tension.
    Hope that makes sense.
