    Default Is the 2008 1.9CDTI 150 Intercooled

    Hi All,

I have 2 cars one is the vectra SRI cdti 1.9 150 and the other is a 54 plate focus TDCI 1.8 Litre. When i look at the focus engine it says turbo intercooled.
It also has a large air intake at the front which is standard and the car pulls very well even though it only has about 110bhp.

Im wondering whether my cdti vectra is getting enough air for the turbo, so when i put my foot down its not able to suck enough air in whereas the focus has a large air intake right at the front of the engine, which must give it plenty of air which i imagine is why it pulls very well from like 70-80mph.
Ill get a pic up in a minute of the focus engine

On the vec/sig it sits behind the radiator. If you look at the boost hose on the CDTI and follow it from the engine you will see it run down into the intercooler.

Thats the engine of the focus, as you can see i have circled the air intake in red.
Basically, if im doing 70 in the focus it pulls faster than the vectra that has 35BHP more!

So has anyone altered the air intake on the vectra?

Or can advise if it would be a good idea or not to adjust it on the vec? cheers

Leave the intake. All that will happen is the engine will run loud and chew more fuel.

ok thanks for the advice. So why do you think the focus pulls stronger even though it has less BHP?
i know it is a smaller car, but more BHP on vec should counteract that.

What about increasing the turbo boost on the vec? would that be advisable? What boost does that vectra run as standard?

The TDCI's typically have more torque lower down to mid rev range. The price you pay for this is lower bhp as you are moving the torque peak lower down the dynograph if you like.

The CDTI will have more power and more torque however compared to the TDCI 110bhp, it won't have the torque lower down. So the theory goes.

    Vectra 1.9CDTI 150 Torque Curve

Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi 115BHP Troque Curve

The Focus has steadier Torque rise than the Vectra, the gradient starts sooner in the rev range than in the Vectra's. This means it's gradient is shallower meaning smooth torque delivery over more rpm's. Compare that to the vectra which albeit steeper gradient but happen over less rpms and you have to wait a bit more in the rev range for the torque to change.

for every 10kg = 1bhp is the rough maths for power to weight.

a remap will up your boost , only safe wae to do it.

Gazza, thanks for all that info ots very helpfull. Imsurprised about that! Its just a standard focus, so bit put off that its similar performance to the 150 SRI!
Any idea how much a re-map on the vec would be and who to get it done with? maybe Bluefin?
