    Unhappy 2.2 engine noise

I am fully conversant with timing chain issues as I had one replaced on my 2002 2.2 150 SRI at 70k, fortunately I heard it in time before any lasting damage was caused. Sadly the car was written off in a rear end shunt.

After all the threads I had read I could not find one that spoke about the dreaded chain problem on vec' Cs so I replaced it with a 2.2 direct on a 06 plate with 23k on the clock last February. A year later it has just 35k on the clock.

When the wife came to pick me up from the station yesterday I commented that the car sounded like a diesel and suggested it may need a 'bit of a blast'. We arrived home and I took the car for a spin but the noise was so bad I decided not to drive it.
We have had a mechanic take a look at it today and after a phone call suggested that I change the oil and filter to see if the filter had started to disintegrate. The filter was 'crunched' as if it had been installed incorrectly. Alas it has made no difference, the engine seems to rattle from everywhere - I can't beleive that it was fine one minute and then 5 miles later it sounds like the engine is trashed. From experience does anyone think it could just be the chain or tensioner?

    Default Timing chain???

Car booked in at the stealers on Tuesday for an inspection. I have already rang customer services to complain and their response is 'it's out of warranty' - yes I know but it should last longer that 35k !!

Its the chain tensioner that fails on the 2.2 direct mate. VX will charge you an arm and leg. Get yourself onto z22se.co.uk and contact Benny. He does chain far far cheaper than VX and only used Genuine GM kits.

I'm a member of that site from when I had the 150 and done a lot of research - I would like VX to contribute (lol) and the only way forward on that one is for them to look at the car and charge me £47 for the privilege although I think I'm wasting my time.
Looking at the videos it does'nt look that big a job although thats with engine out, the hardest thing would be sqeezing it in the garage.

Thanks guys you have convinced me to tackle the work myself. Taken the cam cover off but can't go any further as I need a set of star sockets - off to the factors tomorrow.
May not be releavant but there's hell of a lot of play in the chain as it comes off the inlet sprocket and drops downwards - is this whats causing all the rattle?

not sure if u have bought the chain kit or not yet but if u have the money do the balancer shaft chain too.also when u buy the kit make sure the one cam sprocket has a raised profile on one side as this is what the cam sensor reads. http://www.speedsterclub.nl/biblioth...%20(Z22SE).pdf here is the pdf i used if u haven't got it allready.
when i did mine i only removed the engine mounts under the air box and with a piece of wood between sump and jack i just raised the engine that way,to remove aux belt tensioner and some of the hard to reach engine cover bolts. if u need any help u know where we are to ask. although cable ties are helpfull a spare set of hands is more help when it comes to ensuring the timing mark on the chain stays in place on the lower sprocket.

    Update....
While turning the engine to find the timing marks on the cam sprokets I can see what all the noise is about... the chain goes slack between the 2 by about 10mm and then suddenly flicks up and hits the chain guide between the 2 sprockets - I assume that is because the tensioner is u/s. As for the coloured links I can only find a purple one.
Will get stuck in over the weekend.

have you bought a new chain kit?
the reason i ask is because the new chain has 3 coloured links on it,or are u just planning on changeing the tensioner. the reason i ask is if there is that much play then the chain may have slipped,in fact i would say it deffo has due to it running like a diesel, which means with the original chain you without the cam locking tool will not be able to time it back where it should be.something else for you to check fella is the camshaft shims or journals(the bits that hold the cams in place) for any sign of wear, again reasoning behind this is due to the oil filter being crushed due to prob being the wrong one,the oil may have been blocked by filter debris from getting to the cams which can cause them to seize, causing the chain to slip and giving u all ur probs.
