Get someone to rev your car mate, and see if it's doing what it should.

They look gunked up so some carbon cleaner could be used to help them move a bit better.
Can you lift the bar up? Mine was just laying there feeling sorry for itself and could be picked up but your seems to look ok apart from the gunk seeping out around the plastic inserts

If 2 are off then it is fooked, the bar controls the swirl flaps in the manifold, it causes some of the exhaust gases to spin when entering the pots, giving low down grunt! I did notice the difference when i refitted mine which was feeling sorry for itself! I used the £1 tap washer repair 'how2' and mine hasnt fell off since, i did the repair around 4000 miles ago and still spot on! Worth thinking about to get a little longer out of it

I have been trying to solve the problem of having no grunt about the car, tried everything else. You think repairing this would do the trick?

if its just lacking low down grunt then reparing it would make a difference, i drove mine for the first year with the bar off, not knowing what it did, after repairing it and refitting i noticed a big difference on the low down torque, when pulling away from lights etc check your 2 small vacuum hoses for splits on the elbows, clean your boost sensor and for peace of mind give your EGR valve a clean, your car should then run spot on..

My swirl rod has been lying on it's side for over 30,000 miles and the car runs fine, slightly lumpy idle when cold but otherwise no problems, I think it depends on how the car is driven, I take mine for a 100 mile run at least once a week and I don't have to sit in traffic queues very often. I'm waiting to have a new one fitted, only because I've decided to keep the car and have the cash (fortunately) to get it done. The manifold itself isn't that expensive, about £160.00 but it's a big job changing it, about 6 hours. Plus I'm having the timing belt and water pump replaced, so it becomes quite pricey. Here's a pic of the new one waiting to go on. hth.
