The cruise control light doesn't come on when you turn on the ignition, only when you turn the cruise control on with the buttons on the left stalk.

I think you may have to press the brake pedal once after starting the engine before the cruise control will work.

As James said the engine has to be running, the car has to have had either the clutch or brake pedal pressed and I think you have to be going over 20mph for it to work

I normally set off having pressed the brake, however when I forget I can often get several miles without having to have touched the brake pedal, but with plenty of gear changes (using the clutch)

This has caught me out a few times, pressing the cruise control on as I reach the M73 and the speed starts to fall below 40mph...
Equally, got the M74 once and then switched it on, then again noticed the speed starting to fall
Ironically, need to touch the brake pedal in order to activate the cruise control

One question - why have you come to found that the cruise control may not work? Is the car new to you or have you been doing something to it?

Knowing the reason may help to identify the problem if we haven't already done so in the posts above.

One other thought is that the cruise control buttons on the stalk can be a bit dodgy so make sure you press them firmly. My 'set' button (top front) doesn't work occasionally, and I just have to keep pressing it until it does.

Looks like MARKPRIOR bought this car last week and so was not aware that it was necessary to press the brake pedal
Therefore might have been sitting looking for the light coming on as part of the pre-ignition check, or as I find driving for a short distance and it has still not been activated

I can confirm brakes only need to be used before you are able to use CC along with over 20mph.
