`Spanner light

As i was driving home last night from kent to lincolnshire and about halfway up the spanner light came on and the car went into limp mode. Mpg dropped right down to about 25mpg at a 65mph cruise in 6th gear! I pulled in at the next services and turned the engine off and went in to grab a drink. When i came back out i was hoping it would have reset itself but when i started it up again it was still in limp mode. But after about 30 mins along the motorway the light went out and the mpg shot back up to 55ish and the car felt normal again!

Guesswork was never a reliable method of fault finding.
Does the car/spanner light remain on until the engine is started? If so, then a stored fault code is available and could be read out to find out what was the problem.

I've checked this morning an it illuminates when I start the car but then goes out again. A place down the road does code reading for £25 so might just pop in there to see what the score is
