    Default Smell in Cabin....

Recently i have deduced a leaky gearbox (manual 1.9cdti 150) due to what i believe to be a n/s seal gone where the drive meets the box.....the stuff is all over the plastic base pan due to a drip every two or three days going un-looked after for a while, there is a sponge like thing stuck to the plastic basepan and its right next to the exhaust when the pan is attached as its next to the exhaust as it reaches the first box under the car.

THe exhaust is heating the sponge and inturn the oil and then that smell is getting into the cabin, i have smelt the gear box oil and its definately that as the smell doesnt appear until the engine is running for a few mins and up to temp and also the smell in the cabin is identical to the smell of gearbox oil when rubbed between my fingers next to my nose.

I am getting this seal looked after on saturday, i am wondering if i take off the plastic base pan for a few days would that be a stupid idea as its obviously there for a reason.

i asked this question at work the other day and apparently the undertray is there for a few reasons, fuel efficiency, (aerodynamics), try and make the engine quieter and to catch any leaks, hence the absorbent stuff. i cant see any real problems with taking it offf just for a coule days tbh unless your doing alot of miles and while its off get some decent degreaser, traffic film remover on it soakingto try and break all the crap down and disolve it then go jet wash it lol
