Default I need help ... Ive got a fuel leak ???

Hi all i need some help .

ive had my vectra now 2 weeks and ive noticed that you can smell fuel everytime the car has been running and you have the bonnet up.

i managed to locate the area the smell is coming from, its the back left hand edge of the engine at the top , there is like a black box bolted to the back of the engine with a pipe that feeds it coming from the main common rail.

sorry for the pictures but this is the item in question........

there is a pipe that comes from this to the common rail and i noticed it was weeping from around the end where it joins this box.............

around the union in the pictures above.

i manged to tighten that and thought i had cured the leak but i was wrong.

the smell is quite bad and if i reach under the black box it is wet with fuel?

can you help me with identifyng the box and tell me what it does and how it fits please?

is it a common failure on the cdti engine and how can it be fixed?

would the leak give me poor mpg and performance?

    many thanks

    steve

looks to me like that is your fuel pump, it might just be that a new pipe is required and as far as i am aware, it's not a common fail on the 1.9dcti's.

Just looked again at your post, you said it was leaking from where the union screws into the black box (pump), right? not the join between that union and the metal pipe going to the fuel rail. You may have to unbolt the pipe, then unbolt the union from the pump and try some thread sealant, ptfe tape maybe to seal the threads then refit. Be careful as there is very high pressure in those pipes, so make sure to wear eye protection. Best i can offer till someone else replies to post.

    thanks for the reply

i dont think its leaking from where the union joins the metal box as ive ran a finger round that and it doesnt get wet?

if i reach under that union and under the black box the bottom of the box is very wet?

are there any pipes under there that may leak? i couldnt feel any?

it was leaking from the pipe where it connects to the union but i managed to tighten that and it doenst appear to be coming from there now?

Might be the underside is wet from the leak, diesel has a habit of going a fair distance. Maybe clean off what you can then keep an eye on it, as i said, the pressure in that pipe is very high, so very likely the spill has travelled and spilled diesel takes ages to dry out.
