Eek Why is the cdti thermostat crap?.

I have done the CCV DIY system and have just spent the last couple of hours re-routing the breather pipe to the rear,as the car went in for a service during the week, and, not wanting to give them any excuse to knock me back on any warranty work,I dismantled the lot before taking it in.I had left the engine running to make sure there were no leaks/smells etc, then, when I had finished it all off,I went for a short run, about 3 miles,to just check everything was ok.
When I set off,the temp gauge was on 90,when I turned into my drive it was on zero.??????????.How bad is that?.I mean,I had only gone down the road for god's sake.Surely VX should be replacing these pieces of s**t they call thermostats as a standard recall.......shouldn't they?. FELIXX.

Nope, the thermostat doesn't affect safety - well directly anyway so there is no need for a recall. So let's look at the list of problems especially with early CDTI 150's:

    - Poor swirl flaps
    - Poor EGR valve
    - Poor injector plugs (well 3rd plug at least)
    - Throttle body issue
    - Thermostat

It seems to be accumulating them doesn't it.

Is the one that is being sold a new type?,because I seem to remember someone saying it had been re-designed.The only reason I'm mentioning it is that I'm going to order one off ebay but don't want to buy the old type if there is a newer model available. FELIXX. (By the way how did your remap go?).

Yeah but reliability compromises that statement - no cheap in the long run.

The DMF wasn't on my list because although common I wreckon most of the time it's user error.

The DPF only affects certain CDTI's and is a general nuisance anyway imho.

These newer style thermostats do seem to be pretty crap, It must be something to do with the way they are designed to fail open, instead of closed. I wonder if any other Marque falls foul of this?

All thermostats are designed to fail open so the car doesnt over heat.

I suspect most of the similar price/spec ones are cutting pennys, the car market's not doing that well at present..
Has anyone done a poll on how these faults have occurred on pre and facelift cars, as from what I've seen, it does seem to be mostly the pre's and early Facelifts that suffer with Gazza4's list.
