    Default exhaust fumes in car

Hi all, Can anyone help me? ive got 1.9 cdti 120, and recently been experiencing exhaust fumes in my car on start up, not while driving though, ive jacked it up today to check the exhaust itself but could not find anything unusual there, but on further examination ive noticed alot of black crap over and around the DPF, although i can not see any visual cracks in the solid/flexi pipes either end of DPF, there is a lot of black crap on a rubber coolant pipe (front of engine, into DPF). Any help is appreciated?????

Could it be a split Turbo pipe?

Thank you for your prompt reply, i intend to have another look tomorrow at the turbo, i did have a swift look earlier on but couldnt see too much, can i run the car without the big black rubber hose, the one to the inlet manifold? it hampers the view of where the black soot is. thanks yet again

I dont think you can run the car without the hose but I think it could be the hose that is leaking. If you take the hose off and check it you can also see where the black soot is

Possibly the egr cooler leaking exhaust gas or maybe the engine breather pipe split where it joins the engine at the back. See if you can post up some pics of the area affected, it's easier to help if we can see it too.

No problems wally. i have a 120 and had similar smells comming into the car when i first got her. It turned out to be a loose clamp on the egr cooler (tubular thing under the thermostat) allowing exhaust gas to escape into the engine bay, then into the heater vents. Like you, it could only be smelled when the car wasn't moving, as airflow disperesses it. Good luck.

Hi again, i have found the leak.... I think, it looks like its the joint of the rigid/flexi pipe from the exhaust manifold to the front of the DPF, i am going to try and nip the clamp up tomorrow in the light. Thanks for your help guys.

My apologies, I have had an embarrasing moment with regards to my exhaust problem. I was told by by a work colleague that the pipe that was blowing on my car was from the exhaust manifold to the DPF...... i spent 10 mins of my life telling a parts bloke from local VX dealer that i need the above pipe only to be told that its the pipe to the EGR cooler that i need, FUM DUCKER. i am going to hand a few slaps to my big colleague tommorrow, they did say that i would have to purchase the whole cooler and pipes, is this right or can i get just the pipe from a autofactors??
