Default shocking MPG 1.9 CDTI help!!!

ok just done my round trip to work (town and dual A road) @ 20 miles. ive returned an average of 21 MPG!!!!

no warning/fault lights are on the dash.

its on 57k so not over due a service.

the car is a 150 CDTI elite estate.

it also seems im getting heavy smoke out the exhaust (although not yet had a chance to fully investigate)

i thought i had a DPF being an estate so smoke should be kept to a minimum??

    any ideas?? turbo perhaps??

Do vauxhall do your serviceing ? if so check your air filter that hasnt been replaced for 4 years ;-)

also look for split vaccume pipes, and the intercooler next to the oil dipstick has a habbit of rubbing on the bolt holding the dip stick tube and splitting.

If theyare all clear see if the bottom of the intercooler is black.

Smoke would be low if the engine wasn't regenerating the DPF. Heavy smoke is a sign it's dumping large amounts of diesel in and has changed the timing to bake the crap out of the DPF. It's normal and nothing to worry about to get clouds of smoke out the back when a regeneration is happening.

Edit: Your car will have a DPF with it being an estate.

As above. It's probably the dpf on a regen cycle. Really you need to let it finish too.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    Thanks guys..

I did suspect a regen but didn't expect the MPG to drop as low as 20!!

I'll take it out for a good drive hoping the regen finishes and take it from there as this is the cheaper option than VX.

It does smell badly of diesel so could be right??

Does any lights in the dash show up when it's doing a regen???

    Thanks

Yes it's right, no there are no lights as fools kept taking them to the dealer when they came on as they thought there was a fault.

Once its started you can just let the engine tick over but its best to keep going. You don't need to keep the engine between 2-3k. How long it takes depends on how blocked it is i think.

easiest way to tell is to keep an eye on the instant mpg as it will raise again when its finished.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
