Default tyre size on standard wheel

following on from my other thread about needing tyres, (wich i cant find)
my wheels are fitted with 215/50/17. and i need 4 someone on here said 225/45/17 would be fine to put on and cheaper, however i just rang VX and they said the tyres would go on the wheel but they dont recomend it (i suspect they were worried about the speedo being out)
i have seen in my diagnostic software the option to tell the car what tyres are fitted so i assume this would correct any speedo error. please could someone confirm or deny this. also
has anyone fitted this size tyre
    was all ok

cheers again for all your help guys

    Which VX did you phone?
Unusual, as their handbook lists both sizes!

My local VX dealership has never mentioned that the car was fitted with "unusual" tyres
Equally, when the fronts were worn they even quoted for both 215/50R17 and 225/45R17

You could use the search function

Yes they fit, yes I have used them, yes it's even in the owners manual, yes the speedo can be adjusted via tech 2, yes that's a waste of money as the difference is tiny.

thanks guys i did say to him its listed in the hand book as using a 225 it says i need a diffrent tyre pressure, his reply was thats for optional wheels that come with that size tyre.
i wasnt going to pay to have them changed by tech 2 i was going to do it myself

215 & 225 sizes are the same pressures. I still use 32 psi all round on my 2.2 auto Vectra and changed over to 225/45/17's a couple of years ago.

I've still got the original brochures that apply to my car
There are optional wheels, but they are the SAME size and fitting
The other options are larger wheels!

    Unable to edit :

This is what it should read :

    17 :
    215/50R17 alloy 71/2 x 17 ET 40
    215/50R17 softstar alloy *optional 71/2 x 17 ET 40
    215/50R17 twinspoke alloy *optional 71/2 x 17 ET 40
    225/45R17 Spectra Sport Lines alloy *optional 71/2 x 17 ET 45
    215/50R17 Delta alloy *optional 71/2 x 17 ET 40

Looks like he may be right!
215/50R17 is the CORRECT size, and 225/45R17 should only be fitted on the Spectra Sport Lines

I have then compared to my wheel fitting chart, and it is correct
How did I miss that one?

Also explains why the tyre fitters struggle to fit the 225/45R17 on to my wheels and have to use loads of paste!

    215/50R17 :
    6x17 to 7.5x17

    225/45R17 :
    7.5x17 to 9x17

Odd that both rims - Spectra Sport Lines and the IE alloys are both 7.5j rims. The only difference is the off set.

Also no one ever had problems fitting xl 225's to mine, maybe its just your garage?

OP - Loads of people have done it with no ill effects.
