Default Diesel won't rev when cold

I've seen a couple of similar posts to this query but none that quite match. For the last three weeks when starting my '06 1.9 diesel it starts first turn of the key but ticks over roughly, then it will not rev properly, even with no load. The exact symptoms are a little different each time, some times it's only a slight problem and goes away almost straight away, but other times I can hardly rev the engine and I struggle to pull away. If I can get the car moving it's really sluggish until the turbo kicks in, at which point it flies - until the revs drop again. The problem goes away as the engine gets warmer but until it's up to full temperature it has no power - which is particularly dangerous when pulling into a stream of traffic.

When starting the car I always wait until the glowplug light has gone out, and there are no warning lamps illuminated. Any ideas where I should start looking?

As your car is out of warranty, take it to a local diesel mechanic for diagnosis

    What mileage?
    Whats the service history like?
    Any recent repairs or failures?

I've actually booked it in this morning but they can't fit it in this week, so I was hoping to fix it this weekend myself as I'm working away next week.
    • Mileage is about 86k
    • Service history is spot on as I've been driving the car since it was new (my ex company car)
    • The only recent repair is the thermostat, otherwise it's never let me down.

Has the symptoms just started since thermostat change or not

It could be a few things mate have you checked your swirl bar on the inlet manifold see if it's still attached

Check 3rd injector wiring and see if plug is corroded

And also strip and clean egr valve and boost sensor

Try all these mate the how 2s are all in the how2 section with pics and step by step guides

Hope thus helps and get back on your finding good luck

When replacing the thermostat, does the water pump need to come out?
Does the thermostat / water pump run off the cambelt or chain in this engine?
If so, then the cambelt or chain might not have been retensioned correctly

It didn't start as soon as I changed the stat, I probably did about 1000 miles first. I didn't touch the water pump or cam belt to change the stat, although I did have to move the cold start device out of the way. I've checked the connector isn't loose, but otherwise I wouldn't expect changing the stat could have an impact on the problem I'm having now.

Thanks for the tips re swirl bar, egr valve, etc. I'll take a look and let you know how I get on.

Now I'm quite used to petrol engines but I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to diesels so I've read the how 2s for a bit of guidance, unfortuantely they seem to refer to an earlier or different version to my engine. I can't even find a swirl bar, so maybe the design has been changed as a result of this common problem, or perhaps mine has fell off completely! I can't even see where it would connect to on my engine (it's a 2006 1.9 Z19DT).

I've checked the injector connectors and they seem fine. I haven't stripped the EGR as it's just too cold out there today - after just five minutes working under the bonnet my fingers were blue! I just hope it's a bit warmer this weekend so I can have a try.

The fault has now been solved and if anyone wants to know for future reference then it was the common problem of a faulty EGR valve. It's now been replaced and the car drives like a dream, probably better than it did when new (this used to be my company car so I've had it since it left the factory).
