    Default noisy drivers door

when you open the door wide, 99% of the time there is a large clunk, i've had this problem before on a car and it was the metal strap, that holds the door open at certain points. is this likely to be the cause of it on a 2003 vectra? and how can i fix it?

Simply change the doorstrap.. takes about 5 minuts.. just unbolt replace and bolt on..

    it sure sounds like that.

There's a white plastic roller-bearing that is supposed to rotate when you open the door. Sometimes it stops rotating and slides instead, which wears it down on one edge (esppecially if you lubricate the check strap with WD40, as the lack of friction makes it slide rather than spin). The noise you're hearing is the flat edge sliding against the strap rather than rotating against it.

cheers all, so it as simple as undo the one bolt on the door frame, then the 2 bolts on the actual door, then it slides out?

Yeah, same! Always wondered what that was! It always seems to happen when I'm going into the car, rather than out of it, so I keep forgetting to have a look at it...

easy fix, mine did this before xmas

Repairing the clunking door stay without buying new one - and without taking it out.

    1. Undo the screw/bolt on the body and move the lever out.
    2. Pull the lever out to full length
    3. Rotate the lever 180 degrees (so the curly cuts will be facing the other way). Yes, you need to apply a little force.
    4. Now undo two nuts from the door side. Don’t worry about the bolts - they are securely melted with the stay.
    5. Turn the whole stay once again 180 degrees. It will take about 1 minute to do it right.
    6. Place the bolts in holes in the doors, secure with bolts, secure the lever with the body using last bolt and voila!

Basically the reason for clunking is that one of the rolls gets worn out, and by rotating the lever 180 degrees you're making the other one do the hard work. Of course, eventually both rolls will be worn out and then you will need to replace the door stay with new one. But this will take about 8 years (I had to rotate the thing after 4 years, so I suppose I’m fine for the next 4 years).

Good luck with that and sorry for my english - apparently it got more rusty during last 5 years than I thought.

Thanks to a kind member who i have copied and pasted this from.
