    Default Thermostat?

    on a 1.8 petrol, what are the symptoms of needing a new one? any ways of testing? and is it damaging to other parts of engine if needing a new themostat is not regonised? thanks

    Basically if the temp needle does not rise up the gauge or only starts to rise when stuck or stopped in traffic, but drops down once you start driving or turn the heater up then the stat is goosed. The only down side is that you use a bit more fuel as the engine never gets to the correct running temperature. Is your the normal 16v or the vvti?

    16V i think, well ive just took it out for a 12 mile run, speeds from 20mph-50mph some stop start, and the needle only started to moved after around 8 miles, and i couldnt get it to go no higher than around 82 mark, even after revving a little. It also seemed to cool pretty quick. And my heaters work fine as they should. how does that sound?

    could it be an air lock, and bleed radiator with bleed valve? or does my story sound normal?

    When you put the heater on hot and full does it drop right out? Normally if you turn teh heater on full the temp will drop slightly, the thermostat the closes allowing the heat to build up again. If you are getting hot air its not an air lock.
    Since changing my thermostat my needle now moves within 2 miles, its really easy to do and defiantly worth it.

    Thanks dasarab, im get hot air fine.... ive been experimenting today and the needle has been goin up to the middle on 90 but no further and when i turn my heaters on the temp needle drops back down. are we sayin this is normal then? the other thing which i put down to coldish weather is i havent heard my radiotor fan kick in for a long time...? ive just cheeck my radiator water and it is a little low and oil need topping up slighty... could all this if there is a prob be resulting in poor mpg? thanks in advance too!

    If its going to 90 that sounds ok. Does it drop right back to 70 when you put the heater on full blast on hot, or does it drop back to 85 and stabilize?

    slowly goes back 70 and when i turn heaters off it slowly goes back to 80-90

    Yea sounds like it failing to me. If it drops back to 70 that means the thermostat is not closing and allowing the engine temp to rise back up. When I put my heater on the gauge drops back to between 80 and 85, then rises back to 85 when the thermostat closes, even with the heater on full.
