Default Paints for a Front grille spray

Hi, I seem to have caught the Mod bug lol.

My first project will be quite a simple one, it is gonna be the front grill on a preface lift vectra.

I dont want to buy one as I want to keep the vauxhall badge, I am thinking of spraying the V on the grille to colour code it with my car, but keep the badge silver.

Could you give me some tips on the paints to use as I have no idea what to use. I want the final finish to be a nice shiny black sapphire.

    Thanks.

For the paints if you just go to Halfords you will be fine.

For tips on doing it I can't stress the importance of preparation. Out of all the time you spend 99% will be rubbing down and 1% spraying.

So do you suggest, rubbing down, priming, colour then lacquer?

Sounds about right, get plastic primer tho, and some tack cloths.

cheers gibbon. This may sound stupid but what grade paper do I need, I am guessing a really fine one.

I have never done this before but you live and learn I guess.

for keying, 600 will be ok, then you want 1200/1500 for flatting.

This mod cost me £60!!! didnt prep for long enough, did it outside, couldnt get the spray round the griffin as i wished, ended up with a right abortion!!!! had to go to straight to dealer and get a new sri grille £59! Ive sprayed wing mirrors before excellent like a pro job, but this grille was a terrible idea. as mentioned prep is cheaper than the cure! make sure you deffo want this mod, and even consider getting a grille of ebay to practice on.

The paint does not stick to the chrome you have to take it ALL OFF. EVERY SINGLE BIT!

I would start with a 300grit to get the chrome off then 600 then 800 wet and dry. Then primer it and rub it down again with a 1200 or 1500grit. Allow it to fully cure first.

Then spray the base and build up the layers rubbing down in between if necessary. Finally before you spray the laquer rub down with 2000 grit. Black is hard to spray because you sort of see straight through it! Then apply the laquer rubbing down between each coat. Then wax and polishing it up to a shine.....

AS I say take the chrome off first...
