    Default power steering pump???

hi all looking for some help here i posted a few weeks back about my steering packing up after having a car wash, checked everything(fuses, connections, fluid level) too no avail then read a post about alternator not charging so charged the battery and hey presto it worked so i fitted a new alternator but the problem has returned one time it works then it doesnt and so on sometimes it fires up while driving and works till i shut off the engine and on restart it fails again lol.
the strange thing is i have NO WARNING LIGHT so am kinda thinking it has too be a faulty pump???? i did read a post somewhere about removing a spring in the check valve in the pump/rack.
the car is an 03 gsi any help would be much appreciated

its possible water may have gotten in the pump? have you checked the colour of the power steering fluid also? may have water in that. Not sure about the battery/alternator thing though

Cheers lee if it is water in the pump could that fool the ecu into thinking it's working when it isn't hence the no warning lamp?? I suspect it is water related just don't get why it's not coming up as a fault. The fluid is clean and there is no wAter contamination it's green and was changed 10k or so ago
