Clutch Gone!

Damn thing!

After sorting out the misfiring and smashing out the cat - I now have some power to play with.... unfortunately, when I plant my foot the revs go up straight away without any increase in road speed.... methinks the clutch has had it.

Thinking about it, if the cat has been gradually restricting airflow then performance will have been right down for a long time now which would probably have meant I wouldn't have noticed the clutch slipping!

Any ideas what I should expect to pay / how long a job it'll be to change the clutch? My mechanic is good and will be happy for me to supply parts if I can source them at the right price and he'll just charge me his labour!

Firstly mate, check the clutch spring. There are many threads on here about some cars having a weak clutch spring meaning the clutch pedal doesn't return right up. Have a look up next to the clutch pedal and see if the is a spring with yellow bits on it.

Also when you are driving try lifting the clutch pedal up with your foot to see if it still does it.

A clutch for a 1.8 should only be about 150-200 quid without fitting but it's a faily involved job to fit it

You said it's pretty involved - any ideas how long a job it is?

Odd thing is that I only had the gearbox go 12 months ago and, when replacing the gearbox and looking at the clutch with the mechanic, decided that it still looked pretty much good as new so back in it went!

I think it's probably got killed when we had the snow / ice recently and the only way to get about was wheelspins and clutch slipping..... a set of winter tyres would have been cheaper!

At least 8 hours worth mate, don't know the exact book time, but the whole front subframe has to be dropped, check the spring first

One bit of good news then!

Just about to pop for a spin and see if lifting the clutch pedal helps.... although it's probably not the best time of day to go and boot the car around!

If I'm not back in a hour, come and bail me out!

Just been for a spin round the block and pulling the clutch pedal up with my left-foot whilst giving it a good boot with the right still results in slip!

Still think it's probably worth getting the new spring anyways as it'll stop the next one dragging - It can't be good for the clutch to be constantly dragged with a dodgy spring! :s
