I found the best way to get it off is to very firmly pull up in the middle. There is a thin channel along the bottom of the screen that the scuttle tray clips into. It helps if you can get you fingers between the screen and the lip of the tray that over laps it to give a little wiggle while pulling. It needs to flex in the middle to help get the edges out from behind the bonnet hinges and under the wing.
Its probably best to try and disconnect the washer hose before removing the tray to prevent damage. And while its off give the drains a clean out, one by the pollen filter and one on the drivers side by the wing.

I changed my wiper rods (from ebay) just before xmas.

Couldnt get the wiper arms & scuttle off, so decided to have a go at changing them leaving the scuttle panel in place. I was about to give up trying to get the new rods over the balls, as the new rods are a good tight fit.

Then i remembered i had some "plumbers" type of pliers in the boot, so i used them to squeeze the new rods over the balls. Worked a treat & had them on in less than 5 mins.

EDIT, heres a pic of the type of pliers i mean.....note the long handles which give a good ammount of pressure when squeezing the new rods onto the balls.

Hope it works for you mate. Its a bit fiddly but do-able, you will get a few cuts & scratches on your hands though

I made sure i fitted the most awkard ones to get at first, which are the lower ones, IIRC,
