Angry Newbie looking for advice ...

I have a 1.9cdti sri on a 05 plate and have had it for just over a year. It has had intermittent problems since i got it but now I have really had enough. I have been told that it needs a new swirl flap manifold, intake manifold, EGR valve and at the same time the timing belt should be replaced aswell all at a total cost of £1302.00 plus £108.00 for the diagnostic test.

When i phoned the garage for more detail the technician said it was a common problem on z19 dth ... does this not mean then that it is a design fault ????

They explained about the sticky egr valves etc but then said that on the swirl flap manifold one of the rods have broken causing damage to the other parts and so guess what its not covered by the warranty because they are damaged and not faulty ... another get out clause!!!! thus leaving me with the hugh expense as detailed above.

Can anyone help me with any ideas ... Many thanks

Vauxhall don't accept 'design faults' - I was advised that modified parts for replacement of clearly obvious design faults were 'Vauxhall's commitment to ongoing improvements'!!

    Is this a VX quote?

I was also told that it happens more frequently in a car that does short journeys rather than long journeys .... with the price of diesel nowadays who can afford to do small journeys but either way i thought a car was designed to be driven regardless

Seems a bit steep, but then again, I would not expect anything less from a dealer.

Just to give you an idea, I had my inlet manifold and actuator done late last year, the bill was £599. I also had cam belt done (full kit) paid £250 for that and the EGR valve can be bought for around £100 and fitted quite easily yourself. So you can get the work done for a good bit less if you shop around.

I'm not sure the cam belt would have to be changed at the same time but if its near the end of its life span, it would not be a bad idea to have it changed.

Think the cam belt is due at 100k, I changed mine at 80k when I bought the car just to be safe. I don't think that short journeys will knacker the inlet manifold any quicker than long trips. There was a problem with them on earlier models and vx re-designed the newer ones to eliminate the problem....i think

Hi mate iv just picked mine up from having the above work done, mine was on 98k so I decided to have the cambelt done at the same time as it's due at 100k, if I was in your position I would also have a new cambelt kit and waterpump done while it's in bits, then you need a new modified inlet manifold and a gasket, I ordered mine from autovaux and it came to £308.00 in delivery, i then just rang a load of local garages who all quoted about £200.00 so I went with a fiat specialist as it's mostly a fiat engine. I didnt replace the actuator for the swirl valves because mine was working, you can check this yourself bu pulling the engine cover off and having a look down the back of the manifold, you will see a metal bar, this is probably just lying there, you will then see 4 black holes which the bar should be connected to, count the 3rd hole from the left side standing at the front of the car then get somebody to rev the car, if this 3rd hole moves then your actuator is fine and dosnt need replacing, my car had lost alot of power intermittently so I booked it in for the work but before it went in I removed the egr valve which is very easy to do and cleaned it out, the plunger in mine was seized so I freed it off and refitted the egr, the car ran fine so I would suggest doing this first as there are people on this forum who have had the bar fall of the manifold and there car has ran fine for 30000 miles and counting so I would try this first, only reason I went ahead with all the above work was because I'd ordered the bits and booked it in at the garage before I cleaned the egr, my cambelt was also due, all in it cost me £500.00 and that's including a cambelt and waterpump change which pretty much any car would need so I don't think it's to bad as some people will charge £300 just for a cambelt change, sorry for the long post but hopefully it will help you a bit
